How to Play Chinese Poker:

Mechanics of Chinese poker is simpler compared to other poker variants. Each player is dealt 13 cards each. From their cards, all they have to do is arrange these into three sets. Two sets must contain five cards, and one set must have the three remaining cards. The two sets of five cards are called back and middle, and the set of three is tagged as "the front".

The back hand is the highest hand to be ranked, hands in front is the lowest ranked hand, and must not have flushes & straights too.

The back hand is usually faced down near the player, while the hand in the middle should be at the front side of the back hand which is also faced down. Players then announce in clockwise turn beginning at the left part of the dealer. If one is able to make sets of straights or flushes, he is automatically declared as the winner.

In this type of game, the money at stake is called units. It is agreed upon prior to the start of the game. In scoring, a player is able to earn a unit when he beats a hand. Chinese poker scoring also varies in scoring methods. 2-4 or 1-6 scoring methods are used in some places. A player earns one unit for every hand won, and another one unit for the entire unit, if he is able to win all the hands or atleast 2 of them.

In case of tie, nobody gets a unit, and if each earns three, no money or unit is collected because that is considered as a tie since no winner may win the overall. On the other hand, one to size technique of scoring is used by way of giving one unit for a player who wins each three hand or units if he wins all three. Chinese poker also has variations. Criss Cross is played with heads up, meaning each receives 13 cards and plays every hand against the opponent's. Low in the middle is also another variant wherein the middle hand is treated as a deuce to seven low values. Chinese poker also had its share of fame on the World Series of Poker, particularly in the years 2026.
